Franchising - the perfect opportunity for flexible working?

Franchising is a great way to give you flexibility and manage a better work / life balance. There are so many franchise opportunities available and can be set up super quickly but what exactly is a franchise?

What is a franchise?

A franchise is an established business that allows you to purchase the systems and branding to run your very own branch of the business, essentially.

The hard work of starting a business from scratch is taken away from you,  so you can get started pretty quickly which is great I you’re wanting to start making money instantly. Whereas starting a business can take months sometimes years of preparation and investment before any return is seen.

How does franchising help with flexible working?

Running a business gives you complete flexibility on how you work and manage your workload. Yes flexible working arrangements can be made with employers either when starting a job or negotiated during working contracts but you are still tied to a business / line manager etc. Having your own business does allow for complete freedom of how you arrange your work to fit in your life.

But it does come with some challenges! Working for yourself isn’t for everybody, so you need be focused and be able to manage your time well for it to work.

Why start a franchise?

It’s so easy to get started! You don’t need to have the idea or do the preparation or even be fully trained or knowledgeable in that area. When you take on a franchise, the investment includes the training, so even if you feel like you don’t fully know the ins and outs of running a business, the franchisor will help train you up!

Plus there is a huge deal of support and guidance available too, whereas starting a business on your own can be a daunting and lonely prospect if you don’t network and make connections.

Franchises usually are more successful than start up businesses, which is great if you’re wanting be independent and run a business without the initial stress of getting started. Plus as the business model is created and is known to be successful (otherwise they wouldn’t franchise!) you know that it’s an easier option to work on your own than starting a new business.

What’s needed to get started?

First of all you need to find a franchise opportunity that fits well in your interests or is something you have some sort of understanding of. There is no point taking on a franchise if in an area you’re not interested in!
